Is There a Plus Side to Playing Host?

Oct 09, 2013

Florence recently hosted the UCI World Road Championships, an event that brought the city to a standstill, and had more than one person threatening to leave town.

Some locals, like me, enjoyed the event. Others described it as a form of psychological terrorism (no joke!).

I have to admit that I’m not what you’d call a cycling fan. Sure. I have my old hand-me-down bike that I use to get around town but its rusted frame and balding tires hardly shout enthusiast.

Another thing I need to admit is being a weekend cycler. While simple on paper, this activity usually takes place after a long discussion with my son about why, despite the fact he’s at ‘big school,’ he still needs to sit in the passenger seat.

Unfortunately, neither of these activities, no matter how enjoyable, qualifies me as an expert in the world of cycling.

They do, however, give me an insight into the plus side of hosting events whether they are big or small.

1. The buzz created from an event eventually draws even the toughest cynics in
2. Giving is satisfying and leads to a serious case of ‘helper’s high’
3. Mixing with new people boosts happiness levels

My advice. We can dedicate old age to complaining but we need to participate in life to really enjoy it!
